Attention Deficit Disorder/Appention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADD/ADHD)
The first step in treating a child with symptoms of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) problems is to make an accurate diagnosis through examining the history of the behavior and psychological testing. It is important to rule out emotional factors which may be contributing to the symptoms.
Symptoms of ADHD include some or most of the following: a short attention span, being is easily distracted, failing to follow through with instructions or complete school assignments or chores in a timely manner, poor organizational skills, difficulty sitting still, and/or exhibit excessive talking. Other impulsive behaviors may be present such difficulty waiting their turn or frequent disruptive or aggressive behaviors.
Therapeutic approaches to ADHD include a psychiatric evaluation for possible medical management of symptoms. A combination of Play Therapy to work on emotional and social issues and behavioral therapy to set goals for implementing a process of monitoring and assessing behavior is recommended for children with ADHD. Creative approaches may be used to teach new skills such as the use of therapeutic games, activities, books, and learning relaxation techniques. Puppets or sand tray activities may be used to enact anxiety producing events and to role play new behaviors. Parents will be helped to develop strategies for helping their child at home and at school. Family therapy may be needed to identify and resolve conflicts with family members. |
